Great stick welder
April 8, 2016
Small package welder, I have been using this at the carpenter training center in Elk Grove,il. To pre-certify for the 3/4" structural test. And purchased same model for at home practice. Only wished I picked up the model with the digital meter. Other than that very happy with the machine!
Small footprint,lightweight package.
Can't think of any, only if you need to see exactly where you are at amperage, pick the one with digital meter.

I used this machine for a while at work stick welding anything from 1" socket welds to 2" super coupons to 36" pipe and this machine wasn't bad but I defiantly prefer a digital output... When making x Ray welds daily there's a big difference between running my root at 65 vs. say 67.. I like to know exactly where I'm at, this machine has a gap between 75 and 100 and it's hard to tell where your at. Nothing's worse then having to stop welding and create more stops and starts in an X-ray weld then having to stop because you can't tell where your machine is at.. I also prefer full dig control, not just soft or stiff...
Smooth Well built machine If it had a digital gauge I wouldn't be complaining...
No digital gauge Lack of numbers on gauge Soft/stiff dig opposed to dial control

Can this welder be used to tig aluminum. Have some 1/8" diamond plate that I would like to have tig welded.
No, the Miller CST 280 Stick Welder 907251011 is a DC only welder so you cannot TIG weld aluminum.

What tig kit would be best for this welder? I don't see any recommended. I prefer using a foot pedal.
The items that you would need to TIG weld with the Miller CST 280 Stick welder would be a WP-17V torch or WP-26V torch as well as an adapter (part number 042418)
You could then add a foot control (part number 300429)
We do not currently stock the adapter but the price for a special order would be $44.00

I'm currently attending welding school, and while I weld plenty there I would like a machine I can run at home as well. Is the CST 280 a good choice for practicing out of position, 6g pipe( multiple sizes, and schedules, 7018 and 6010 both 5/32 max), and most importantly running tig roots? Lastly im assuming this machine is both DCEP and DCEN, is this correct? If not could you recommend some others.
The Miller CST 280 Stick Welder 907251011 would be an excellent choice for the processes you have described.

What are the differences between the cst 250 and 280 is it just the amperage and voltage change over?
Depending on the age of the CST 280 there will be little difference between the Miller CST 280 Stick Welder 907251011 and the CST250. The older models of the CST 250 do not have the voltage change over switch .Without this switch, voltage change over required moving an internal board to a different position to set input voltages. The newer models of the CST 250 have the change over switch which makes them the same as the CST 280. Other than that the only differences between the 250 models and the 280 is the weld output .

How do you change the battery? There doesn't seem to be a door to it.
There is no battery in the Miller CST 280 Stick Welder 907251011.. If you want to change the input voltage settings there is a door on the rear of the machine held closed by 2 phillips head screws. Back out these screws and the door can be opened. Once the door has been opened you will see the voltage changeover switch.

Are the MILLER DYNASTY 350 TIGRUNNER COMPLETE (951627) and the CST 280 STICK WELDER (907251011) on par with each other? That is to say if I can afford to buy the Tigrunner for $9213.00, will the CST 280 be able to do a stick job better than the Tigrunner?
Trying to compare the Miller CST 280 Stick Welder 907251011 to the Dynasty 350 is an unusual request. Both have stick and tig capability. The Dynasty has more weld power and better control for tig welding.. The CST is a smaller more portable machine.. The Dynasty can produce up to 350 amps and can weld up to 5/8 thick steel in a single pass. The CST 280 can produce up to 280 amps and can weld up to 3/8 thick steel in a single pass. Both units have adaptive hot start to provide positive starts without sticking. Welding arc characteristics are similar.Because the Dynasty is a superior tig welder it has many functions and my be a little more difficult to use. The CST 280 has very simple controls. Finally there is the cost the CST280 is priced at $2105.00. The Dynasty 350 package is priced at $8749.00 and is a much more versatile machine

is this a good welder for all day pipe welding with 5/32 6010?
Miller advises that the Miller CST 280 Stick Welder 907251011 would be a good choice for pipe welding with 6010 5/32 all day long.. If you were to run this machine on 3phase power the unit is rated a 100% duty cycle at 200 amps and if you were to run it on single phased the duty cycle would be 100% at 150 amps

can this machine be hooked up to 220. or does something need to be changed to go from 3 phase to single phase
The Miller CST 280 Stick Welder 907251011 can be run on 220 volt single phase.. All you would need to do is turn the voltage selector switch, which is under a cover on the rear of the machine , to the 220/230 volt position . The line voltage input cable is a 4 conductor cable.. When running on 220 volt single phase you would need to use only the black, white and green leads.. Drop out the red lead and insulate it properly..

can i put an HF box on this
You can install a Miller HF-251D-1 High Frequency Arc Starter & Stabilizer 042388 on a Miller CST 280 Stick Welder 907251011. If your plan is to weld aluminum with is set up remember that the CST 280 produces DC weld output current and aluminum needs AC weld output so it cannot be used for aluminum

it is single phase and 3-phase. if i wanted to change plug from 4 wires to 3 wires how would i change wires on the welder it self ? thank you.
The CST 280 comes with a 4 conductor power cord. If you want to run the unit on 3 phase use all 4 wires, black, white, red, and green. On 1 phase use only the black, white, and green. Do not use the red. Tape it off and isolate it. Note in some cases the odd color is not red ,but may be blue or brown. Always drop out the odd color wehn using on 1 phase
